Abstract:
The LIGO interferometers are extremely sensitive to optical scattering or absorption losses induced by both particulate and hydrocarbon contamination. In order to minimize the likelihood of contamination of optical surfaces, numerous operational practices have been implemented at the LIGO Observatories. The purpose of this document is to describe the operational practices that have been implemented so that it can serve as a reference for observatory staff and visitors.

Notes and Changes:
v23 includes the splitting of this document into 2 main sections. The first section is the requirements (top level) section which is 27 pages. The second is a background section which is again ~ 20 pages. It is the first section which is required for CC training purposes. V23 also includes updated sections on bouffant caps and scrubs. Updated March 18th 2013. CiT.
