Abstract:
This is the recommended way to apply first contact to suspended optics (HXTS and QUAD optics) in chamber. This is also the key document for information associated with the Removal Procedure. Watch the bolt on cone assembly video, G1300049, before using for the first time.

Keywords:

Notes and Changes:
CHANGES
v7 Re-write of items #5 and #6 on page 13. Refer to v6 for before and this rev (v7) for to. Essentially updated to add links to LIGO docs on electrometer and (extended) discharge procedure to include ITMs. Links also added below.

v6 updated note on respirators to match LIGO-E0900479-v2, Instructions for taking Low Volatility Residue (LVR) Wipe Samples.

v5 Removed communication on respirators see v4.

v5 is now the key document for information associated with the Removal Procedure. v5 also includes key information about discharging the optical surfaces after a first contact cleaning.

V4 now includes updated procedure on blowing with top gun after peeling FC. 4.5 minutes for large optic surface and 3 minutes per HLTS and 1 minute per HSTS surface. Based on this work https://alog.ligo-wa.caltech.edu/aLOG/index.php?callRep=13117 and scaled by area based on this work.

V4 also includes new recommended electrometer i.e. http://www.trifield.com/content/ultra-stable-surface-dc-volt-meter/

2) The patent associated with this work can be seen at the US Patent and Trademark’s PAIR website,
http://portal.uspto.gov/pair/PublicPair using Publication number 20140196748 (OR) on the Google patents link to the pending application is here: https://www.google.com/patents/US20140196748?dq=14/150421&hl=en&sa=X&ei=82EGVNeoJIO7ogTm84HgBg&ved=0CB0Q6AEwAA

3) Compatibility of First Contact and Common Solvents:
The clear and red polymer solvents and their thinners ARE NOT compatible, do not mix them together in wet or dry form.
Isopropanol and Methanol ARE NOT compatible with first contact, do not mix them in wet OR dry form.
Acetone IS compatible with first contact and can be used to clean up dry FC or FC brushes.

4) Alignment layer: As of 01/15/14 optics will not be shipped to the sites with an alignment layer in place. The alignment layer section of this E1300017-v3, Sec. 5, will still be included for now for operators who have received optics prior to 01/15/14. Refer to LIGO-E1300142: DCN, General Optics Cleaning Procedure for full details.
