Relaxation effects in the fused silica test mass interacting with the ESD.

An experimental setup consisting of monolithic fused silica torsional oscillator and comb electrodes (ESD) has been developed in order to measure various effects due to charge accumulation on fused silica surface under the influence of electrostatic field produced by the ESD. Sensitivity close to thermal noise limit has been reached near resonant frequency (63.13 Hz) during measurements in air. A numerical model that can compute time dependence of the interaction force between fused silica test mass and the ESD and has good agreement with experiment has been developed.
