Abstract:
100 years ago, Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves. These ripples in the space-time geometry propagate at the speed of light and are witness to some of the most energetic events in the Universe. Following a major upgrade, the two detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) held their first observation run between September 2015 and January 2016. With the detection of the first gravitational wave signatures from two merging black hole binary systems a new era in astrophysics has begun with the expectation of many new intriguing discoveries over the next decades.
