The Boxing Day Event
26 December 2015
Discovered
Black hole merger
Type
Hanford, WA
Livingston, LA
Data was collected at the LIGO sites in Washington and Hanford, and compared with supercomputer simulations in a process called matched filtering. This was done to identify the signal amongst background noise. A gravitational wave can be detected when it closely matches one of the simulations.
