LIGO Document G1601362-v2
- During the first observing of the advanced LIGO during September 12, 2015 to January 19, 2016, two gravitational wave events, GW150914 and GW151226, were detected. Both of them are due to the merging of binary black holes. The masses of the black holes of the first event were much higher than those available from the observation of X-ray binaries in the Galaxy, indicating that they may have been formed in low metallicity environment. On the other hand, the black hole masses inferred from the second event were comparable to those of the X-ray binaries. Many more black hole binaries will be detected during the upcoming observing runs, allowing us to probe the universe through a new window.
